The day before Eid, Adel told me that it was the day when Allah reviews the actions of Muslims, and sets their fate down for the coming year. I asked what I should say..."Good luck" seemed pretty inappropriate. Adel said that I could say "may God forgive you."
But I couldn't really bring myself to say that, either. It sounds full of blame and pity.
Here's a nice prayer for Yom Kippur (The God of Abraham stays in His groove and inscribes the fate of Jewish people into the Book of Life the next week) that I had never heard it before, but I think it does the job.
Let all our vows and oaths, all the promises we make and the obligations we incur between this Yom Kippur and the next, be null and void should we, after honest effort, find ourselves unable to fulfill them. Then may we be absolved of them.
Whoever your god is, that's a fair deal.
