I'm glad my atheist fiancee made me go to church today

Because Amy Anu-Birge was speaking today, and she's awesome.

It's been really hard for me to drag myself to church since, oh, I don't know...I started going? Back in Manhattan, All Souls always reminded me of that Eddie Izard routine about church singing. To this day I can't sing a hymn without thinking of his "O God Our Help in Ages Past."

Straight-armed Brian and I used to play a game where at the beginning of the service, we'd pick a few words or phrases we bet the minister was going to say. Then, every time he said one of your words, you got a nickel. The safest bet was "In my forthcoming book," which was usually good for a quarter.

I usually don't regret it once I get there. I don't always love it, and I'm bored a lot, and I hate sitting alone in the pew like a widow or a homeless person after free donuts. But there's usually something so redeeming, like Amy today.
